Blog Post: Blooms, Balls, and Big Feelings: Another Fun Day in English Club!

Hello, everyone! Welcome back to our English After School blog! If you could peek into our classroom after the final bell rings, you wouldn’t see tired faces. You’d see excitement, teamwork, and a whole lot of English happening in the most active way possible. Today was a perfect example of that.

Our theme for the day was “Emotions,” and we kicked things off with a game that had everyone on their toes—literally!

Part 1: The Great Dodgeball Dialogue!

The main hall echoed with laughter and the soft thump-thump of dodgeballs. But this wasn’t just any game of dodgeball. We call it “Feelings Dodgeball,” and it has a special twist!

The rules were simple: if you got hit by a ball, you weren’t out—you were up for a challenge! You had to come to the front and answer a question from the teacher. Today’s target language was all about connecting weather and feelings:

“When it’s ______, I feel ______.”

It was wonderful to hear the students think on their feet. We heard some fantastic answers:

· “When it’s sunny, I feel happy!”

· “When it’s rainy, I feel sleepy.”

· “When it’s snowy, I feel excited!”

· And my personal favorite: “When it’s windy, I feel like a superhero!”

This game was more than just fun. It got everyone’s blood pumping, encouraged quick thinking, and gave each student a chance to speak English in front of their friends in a low-pressure, supportive environment. The shy students cheered for their teammates, and the energetic ones got to burn off some after-school energy. A perfect win-win!

Part 2: Crafting Our “Feeling Flowers”

After all that running around, it was time to cool down and get creative. We moved to the tables for a calming craft activity: “Feeling Flowers.”

Each student received a flower template with five big petals. Their mission? To draw a different emotion on each petal. We saw happy faces, sad faces, surprised faces, angry faces, and even a few silly faces! The goal was to help them visualize and identify different emotions in a fun, artistic way.

Once the faces were drawn, the real fun began. Out came the colored pencils, markers, and glitter glue! The students decorated their flowers with a burst of color, each one as unique as their personality. Then came the careful work of cutting them out.

These “Feeling Flowers” are more than just a pretty craft. They’re a tool. They help us build an emotional vocabulary. By drawing a “surprised” face, a child is not just learning the word, but also connecting it to a visual representation. Later, they can look at their flower and say, “Today, I feel like the happy petal!”

Why We Do What We Do

Days like today are a perfect snapshot of our English After School program’s philosophy. We believe that language learning shouldn’t be confined to textbooks. It should be experienced.

· Active games like Feelings Dodgeball make learning physical and memorable. You’re not just memorizing a phrase; you’re living it.

· Creative crafts like Feeling Flowers provide a quiet, reflective space for students to process new vocabulary and express themselves.

By combining high-energy fun with hands-on creativity, we’re helping our students build confidence, make friends, and develop a genuine love for communicating in English.

A big “Thank you!” to all our wonderful students for their energy and creativity today. You are all superstars!

See you at the next class!
